Zack waited for us in his truck, along with four biker bears. I was in too much pain to identify my MC brothers individually.

I wished they’d come sooner so we could have nipped this problem in the bud. Hesitation had swamped me during a critical moment.

If had of my MC brothers at my back, they could do what I couldn’t—kill the dragon shifter while surprise had taken Colin.

Ultimately, I was thankful for their timely arrival.

“Hurry, the wolves will be here soon,” Zack said through an open window.

“We can’t hold them all off. There’s too many of them,” Axel said.

A quick look showed me Axel, and the three other bikers were in a sorry state. They had cuts, bruises and rake marks all over their bodies.

They probably had to fight through a group of Dario’s wolves to come get Adam, Zack, and me.

Adam ran past me, still fully naked. I growled at that. My mate shouldn’t be showing off his goods in front of so many witnesses.

Not important now, I reminded myself.

Part of me knew I was no longer thinking straight. I had taken the brunt of Colin’s attack.

Adrenaline and the need to bring Adam to safety kept me awake and moving.

I kept the agonising pain in the back of my mind. Enemies had hurt me plenty of times in the past, but never like this.

Now that we were in the clear, my grizzly retreated deep inside me.

My body would give out on me any second now, but I forced myself to remain awake.

Adam opened the car door for me. I used the last of my fading strength to haul myself in the backseat of Zack’s truck.

Adam soon joined me, expression worried.

Not wanting him to feel my pain, I blocked our mate bond. That was the least I could do.

“Let’s go. Please hurry. My mate’s badly injured,” Adam said.

“I’m on it,” Zack said. “The bears cleared a path for us. I don’t think we’ll encounter more wolves.”

Zack passed by familiar streets and buildings. I thought I heard a wolf howling in the distance, but I wasn’t worried.

The familiar hum of motorcycle engines told me my MC brothers were close by. They wouldn’t let anything happen to Adam and me.

Adam and Zack talked, but I couldn’t follow their conversation. Adam was probably telling Zack about Colin.

Was the raven Alpha disappointed or surprised I couldn’t do what needed to be done?

I started drifting in and out of consciousness once we exited Four Rivers, but I refused to let sleep take me under.

Troubling thoughts lingered in my mind.

My grizzly didn’t like how the throw down in the alley went down.

In all my twenty-eight years of living, I’d never backed down from a fight or cowered before an enemy.

Then again, I never imagined myself facing off against a fire-breathing dragon.

How Colin ended up in Dario’s sadistic hands was a mystery. He might be an unwilling participant, but Colin was still our enemy.

Adam and I got lucky. Colin spent most of his energy lighting Happy Books on fire.
